ニュージーランドと日本、両国とも世界で最も平和で安全な国――世界平和度指数（Global Peace Index）は各国の平和度を指数で表そうという試みで、シドニーやニューヨークなどに事務所を置く経済平和研究所が、各国の治安や国内外での紛争などを考慮に入れ毎年作成している。10回目となる2016年版は今月8日に発表され163カ国・地域中、ニュージーランドは4位、日本は9位と両国とも上位10カ国入りした。報告書は、世界的な平和の水準が低下し続ける中、平和な国々と、最も平和でない国々の格差が拡大している、とも述べている。

New Zealand and Japan are among the world’s most peaceful nations, according to the latest version of the Global Peace Index announced earlier this month by the Institute for Economics and Peace, an international independent think tank. The annual index is an attempt to measure the overall peacefulness of a country by observing various factors.
Among 163 nations and territories surveyed in the latest and tenth edition of the index, New Zealand was ranked fourth and Japan ninth. The report also said in its executive summary that “overall global levels of peace continue to deteriorate while the gap between the most and least peaceful countries continues to widen.”
